Mother-of-the-Bride Romanian
Style
Well, to start with if I was hoping for a one day power trip as Mother-of-the-Bride…forget
that noise! Besides the fact that I couldn’t speak the language, so no one was listening even if
I was talking, there is no “The Honorable Mother-of-the Bride” in Romania. I’m not sure
who calls the shots. I heard rumors that the groom’s mother does all the planning and arranging,
but I know that in our situation everything was left to the Bride and the Groom.
Actually, speaking as a recovering control freak, this was one way
for me to enjoy what was happening around me; render me incapable of communicating and driving! I highly
recommend it. If anything went wrong, I was obviously not responsible and probably not capable of fixing
it. The best I could do was nod my head, shrug my shoulders and with upturned hands act like I was sympathetic
even though I didn’t understand a word they just said. (oh yeah and point to the bride).
I did have my moments though. They
do not have wedding rehearsals in Romania and I had not thoroughly thought out all the details involved until it was too late.
First of all, because no one is waiting for the mother-of-the-bride, the processional started without me in my seat.
So I scurried down the side aisle just in time to see the ring bearer and flower girl go by. Then
I panicked. In Romania, do they stand when the bride comes down the aisle? Do I lead
them or follow someone else’s lead? The bride and her father appeared at the door…so I stood…ALONE.
So I sat down and franticly glanced back at the translator. She was motioning to stand up.
So I stood up again…alone. So I sat down again…now I’m starting to giggle.
Thankfully everyone was looking at the beautiful bride and they eventually stood without my help.
I did think I was going to have my moment of glory
when the groom accidentally tied the ribbon holding the wedding rings into a knot. I was reaching for my
pretty silver purse that matched my silver shoes (see 2009.05.01)
and pulling out my trusty pocket scissors (see Label Queen Feb 09) when the groom’s brother dashed to the front with a pocket knife! He
saved the day, I missed my chance.
Honestly, I don’t like being in the spotlight so it was the perfect way to be the Mother-of-the-Bride.
They did a great job and I enjoyed the benefits.
