Gardens With Meaning
Gardens can be so much more than a plot filled with beautiful
flowers and vegetables. If you are a romantic at heart, and many gardeners are, there are ways to bring
even more meaning to your garden.
Friendship Garden: It’s not unusual for gardeners to share
plants, even with complete strangers. But my neighbor, who’s backyard is a feast for the eyes, has
one section that she calls her “Friendship Garden”. All the plants in that section have been
given to her by friends. What a wonderful way to remember those special people and the memories associated
with them. If your family is wondering what to give you for a special occasion, there’s your answer;
a plant for your garden!
Heritage Garden: I have had the pleasure of walking through the
gardens of many friends. It is not unusual for them to tell me that a specific plant or shrub has come
down through the family. Quite often it is a rose or a lilac bush. A few times it’s
been when the “old homestead” is being sold and they are taking memories with them. It’s
a great way to introduce the new generation to the generations that have gone before. There is something
intriguing about a plant, tree or shrub that was growing 50 to 100 years ago.
Memorial
Garden: Instead of spending lots of money on an arrangement that will fade away, why not plant
a tree, shrub or even a special perennial in memory of a loved one or friend? It will bring many more years
of enjoyment and reflection.
