Gardens With Meaning
Gardens can be so much more than a plot filled with beautiful flowers and vegetables.  If you are a romantic at heart, and many gardeners are, there are ways to bring even more meaning to your garden.

Friendship Garden:  It’s not unusual for gardeners to share plants, even with complete strangers.  But my neighbor, who’s backyard is a feast for the eyes, has one section that she calls her “Friendship Garden”.  All the plants in that section have been given to her by friends.  What a wonderful way to remember those special people and the memories associated with them.  If your family is wondering what to give you for a special occasion, there’s your answer; a plant for your garden!

Heritage Garden:  I have had the pleasure of walking through the gardens of many friends.  It is not unusual for them to tell me that a specific plant or shrub has come down through the family.  Quite often it is a rose or a lilac bush.  A few times it’s been when the “old homestead” is being sold and they are taking memories with them.  It’s a great way to introduce the new generation to the generations that have gone before.  There is something intriguing about a plant, tree or shrub that was growing 50 to 100 years ago.

Memorial Garden:  Instead of spending lots of money on an arrangement that will fade away, why not plant a tree, shrub or even a special perennial in memory of a loved one or friend?  It will bring many more years of enjoyment and reflection.

Souvenir Garden:  Instead of buying another mug or key chain, why not remember your road trip with an appropriate plant or bulb?  Of course be sure that it’s legal to take it across state or country borders.  And please do not dig up the wildflowers!

Tradition Garden:  I became a grandma for the first time two years ago.  At the time I was building a new perennial bed and decided to start a new tradition.  I would plant a day lily for each of my grandchildren.  At the time I knew I was going to have a grand-daughter so I purchased “Hush Little Baby” a ruffled pink lily.  I can’t wait until my little sweetie is old enough to walk through the garden and show her the beautiful flower that is “hers”.  I just learned I’m going to be Grandma again.  I don’t know yet if I’m planting “Autumn Prince” or “Little Lavender Princess”.

Gardens can be so much more than a pretty spot in the yard.  They have the potential to carry the heart of  the gardener to friends and family alike.

Do you have a special garden tradition?  I would love to hear about it.
