Going
through the Motions
I recently heard a song on the radio. Part of the lyrics go;
“I don’t wanna go through the motions.
I don’t wanna go one more day without Your all consuming passion inside
of me
I don’t
want to spend my whole life asking what if I had given everything
Instead of going through the motions”1
Going through the motions, it happens so easily; doing
all the right things but without purpose or passion. The books I have been reading lately (see Book Jacket)
have given me reason to reflect on what I’m doing with my life. Abraham Lincoln and Greg Mortenson made an impact on
the world around them in a big way. It’s always quite intimidating to read about these kinds of people along with all
the great heroes of the faith. But as I was contemplating the direction of my life the answers have started to come through
what I have heard and read in God’s Word.
My daily reading lately has taken me through Ezra and Nehemiah; the people of God working together
to rebuild the temple and walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah 4:6 says, “So built we the wall; and all the
wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.” In Sunday School
we have been in I Corinthians 12 studying how God has gifted the body of Christ and brought them together for his purposes.
“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him” I Corinthians 12:18
Think of the potential!
A group of people specially gathered by God, gifted by God and empowered by God to accomplish His work.
Wow! I want a piece of that action. “…and the people had a mind to work”.
What is done for Christ will impact not just the world around us but eternity as well. Let us renew
our dedication to serving Christ; our time, our money, our energy! Work it out through the local group
of believers of which God has made you a part. The results will be phenomenal!
“I don’t wanna go through the motions.
I don’t wanna go one more day without Your all consuming passion inside of me
I don’t want to spend my whole life asking what if I had given everything
Instead of going through the motions”1
